SmartHelm – the title of the research project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure that is dedicated to the development of an intelligent bicycle helmet.
With the increasing relevance of e-commerce and the associated effort for logistics providers, the relevance of faster, safer and more sustainable solutions is also growing. More and more logistic companies are using bicycle couriers for deliveries in order to work both more efficiently and more environmentally friendly, especially on short or particularly busy routes, e.g. in the city centre. The BMVI-sponsored research project SmartHelm uses state-of-the-art sensor technology and smart glasses integrated into the helmet to determine, by means of eye-tracking and electroencephalography, what causes distraction, stress or concentration fluctuations in bicycle couriers. In the long term, the aim is to create an assistance system that offers more safety for all cyclists and thus also for everyone on the roads.
